Lib Dems to lease 50 homes to support homeless households
In the face of rising homelessness across the St Albans district, the Liberal Democrat led district council has agreed to lease up to 50 new homes to ease this crisis.
The Liberal Democrat administration has pushed forward plans to lease homes to get people out of the hotel and bed & breakfast accommodation that can be so damaging to their welfare.
This form of temporary accommodation will provide much more suitable homes for those in need, including access to facilities like kitchens, fridge freezers, and separate bedrooms and living spaces.
The agreement will also significantly cut spending on temporary accommodation, allowing more of local taxpayers’ money to be spent on service provision across the district.
Councillor Paul de Kort, Leader of St Albans District Council, said:
“Everyone should have access to a warm, safe space to live. Rising homelessness is a national problem but here in our district, we Liberal Democrats are determined to tackle its impact head on.
“These new properties will ensure families can access the accommodation and facilities they need to give them stability and better prospects whether for work or at school, providing at the same time a more cost-effective approach to the housing crisis for local taxpayers.”
