Lib Dems nominate leadership team for St Albans District Council

22 May 2026
A group of people are standing in front of the St Albans district council offices. Four people are stood in a line at the front (Daisy, Paul, Helen and Victoria). All of them are smiling and looking at the camera. There is a crowd stood behind them, all holding orange diamonds displaying the words Liberal Democrats and the Liberal Democrat bird logo.

Following a group meeting on 20th May and their usual annual internal elections, the Liberal Democrats have unveiled their nominations for the St Albans District council leadership team.

Subject to a vote of the whole council, the team is ready to drive forward the delivery of major improvement projects for the St Albans district throughout the final two years of the district council. In 2028, the council will be abolished under local government reorganisation.

Now that the team has been nominated, the final appointments will be voted on and confirmed at a full council meeting on 27 May.

Paul de Kort, leader of the Lib Dem group, said:

“Subject to a vote of the whole council, our nominated leadership team is ready to go full throttle in driving forward the Liberal Democrats’ priority projects across the district.

“From investing in social homes in London Colney to community centres like the Cottonmill Community and Cycling Centre, protecting vital services like CCTV and fly-tipping enforcement, installing solar panels on council buildings like Harpenden Leisure Centre and more, we Lib Dems have shown that we have delivered on our pledges and we are determined to keep going for the final two years of the council before it is abolished.

“We’ve got exciting plans to deliver further projects for our community, including a fantastic new sports and community hub on the site of the William Bird pavilion, and our continued work revitalising the River Ver.

“There is great continuity and expertise in our nominated leadership team and two fantastic additions, all bringing important experience in many fields.

“Despite difficult local government funding and the uncertainty of how local government reorganisation will play out in our local area, we are determined to keep protecting services against the odds and delivering for our local residents.

Daisy Cooper, MP for St Albans, said:

Whilst the government are slashing local government funding in real terms and piling on the costs of local government reorganisation, one thing’s for sure: we Liberal Democrats have shown that we will deliver for St Albans - against the odds. I’ll keep pressing the government to deliver a fair funding deal for our area.”

Victoria Collins, MP for Harpenden and Berkhamsted, said:

It’s brilliant to see the new leadership team raring to go, and set to champion our voices in our Liberal Democrat-led district council.

“Although local government reorganisation has left a mess for councils like ours, who are stuck awaiting confirmation from the Labour government on how unitary councils will be structured across Hertfordshire from 2028, we Lib Dems have shown that whatever the context, our priorities are delivering for local residents.

“From ensuring people can access the homes and services they need to battling the nature and climate crises, these remain the priorities of our brilliant new leadership team.”

Within the leadership team are:

  • Paul de Kort, Helen Campbell, Keith Cotton, Robert Donald, Giles Fry, Edgar Hill, Simon Johns, Anthony Rowlands and Sarwar Shamsher.
