Liberal Democrat Raihaanah Ahmed has won the Marshalswick East and Jersey Farm by-election.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Raihaanah worked with GP trusts to set up vaccination centres in community buildings. During lockdown Raihaanah set up the St Albans Community Pantry, an organisation that still feeds hundreds of people every week. Raihaanah is also a well-known community activist in the Marshalswick East and Jersey Farm area and runs a local hospitality business with her husband.

Raihaanah said: “It’s such a huge honour to be elected as a councillor in my home area of Marshalswick East and Jersey Farm and I want to thank everyone who voted for me. I love our community and can’t wait to hit the ground running.”

Helen Campbell, Deputy Leader of St Albans District Council, said, ‘‘We Liberal Democrats pride ourselves on electing councillors who really understand the heart of our communities. Raihaanah will be a really strong addition to our council group and will be a strong voice in representing her local community.’’
