A grant of £173,000 has been secured by the Liberal Democrat-led St Albans City and District Council, to make Harpenden Leisure Centre more energy efficient. The grant will be used to install solar panels on the roof to help reduce bills and cut harmful emissions and assist the Council towards achieving its aims to make the district net zero by 2030.

The Liberal Democrat- led St Albans City and District Council, which owns the centre, applied for the grant along with its leisure contractor Everyone Active.

Helen Campbell, lead councillor for sport and leisure and Deputy Leader of the District Council, said:

‘’Your Liberal Democrat councillors are over the moon that the council has been awarded this grant. Our number one priority is always the environment, so it is fantastic that we have been able to simultaneously secure a win for both the community and the climate.

‘’Ensuring that our local facilities are as energy efficient as possible also puts us firmly on track for our aim of achieving net-zero by 2030.’’
