Sandy Walkington, Parliamentary Candidate

St Albans is a great place to want to represent in Parliament. I have lived in or near the city since 1980. I was married in St Albans Abbey, had my appendix removed in St Albans City Hospital, my wife is a local architect, my children were born here and attend Hertfordshire schools. Hertfordshire is my home and I am passionate about the unique character of St Albans and its surrounding villages. I started the Hands Off Herts campaign to oppose the Government's proposals to build over our Green Belt. I have also campaigned on the poor state of our local health services, most recently with a house-to-house survey delivered to every local resident to get your views.

I want this space to help people to find out more about the local Liberal Democrats and our campaigns. You can catch up nationally as well. And you can find out more about me and what I am thinking and doing by visiting my own sandy4stalbans.org website. Please also use this site to get in touch with us.

New LibDem leader Nick Clegg visited St Albans on Friday 8th February to put forward far-reaching ideas on improving mental health services in the UK. Giving a widely reported keynote speech at the Guardian Public Services Summit at Sopwell House Hotel, he pointed out that "one in four Britons suffers from a mental illness at some point in their lives. Quotes of the Week

"Liberalism in Britain has lost a great champion, the Liberal Democrats, a great advocate and our public life, a great servant."

Lord Paddy Ashdown

In memory of Lord Richard Holme, who died on 5 May

"If the Tories want to claim that they are going to cut corporation tax, they have to come clean about how they are going to pay for it. Cutting the main rate of corporation tax to 25% will cost more than £5bn a year. If David Cameron is to have a hope of sounding credible he must state clearly where the money will come from. Otherwise this will be seen as yet another unfunded tax cut."
