Should gas guzzlers pay more to park?

What do St Albans residents think of the Richmond-upon-Thames proposal to charge more for residents’ parking permits for gas-guzzling cars – as per their recent announcement?

We always hear that people are not prepared to stick their hands in their pockets to pay for going green, yet a clear majority of Richmond residents supported this proposal.

Perhaps in St Albans city centre it would be better to charge by the inch – ie length of car.  I remember when I lived in Pageant Road that our car was longer than the frontage of the house – that was just about OK when not every house had a car and most houses only had one.

But times have changed.  One Hart Road resident ruefully told me he only owns a car to make sure he keeps the space outside his house…  But seriously we have to start taking hard decisions just as the Richmond upon Thames council has done if we are to make any impact on global warming.  Let me know what you think!
