Police cars came screaming past me on the Hatfield Road on Tuesday, sirens going, lights flashing. They turned left into St Peter's Street where I was also going, and screeched to a halt at Barclays Bank where there were already cars with flashing lights, the insistent ringing of an alarm bell and a security van with its rear doors open.
Now I read in the Herts Ad
that it was a bank robbery. Apparently two men made off with a large sum of cash which was about to be loaded into one of the cash machines. It's never comfortable when these sorts of incidents come to our own streets. And it's not as if the banks haven't lost enough money already this year.
Impressively quick response from the police though.
